Institute for Renewable Energy
Applications in the area of building energy modelling and building resilience analysis are considered.
The researcher will be part of the team Healthy and Comfortable Buildings within the Energy Efficient Building (EEB) research group in the Institute for Renewable Energy.
Core activities include the development of low energy cooling design solutions to provide resilient, healthy and thermally comfortable indoor environments, the assessment of building resilience to heat wave events under selected climate adaptation and mitigation measures and scenarios, the analysis of different user lifestyles and interaction with building controls as well as their potential impact on building energy performance. Competences in building performance simulation and data analysis are required. Activities will be carried out within research projects in cooperation with academic and industrial partners.
motivation to join Eurac Research and perform the following tasks.)
**Tasks**:
Main tasks:
- Design, run and validate coupled thermal and airflow models, post-process and analyze simulation results to compare mitigation and adaptation strategies in relation to different user behaviour profiles, and energy consumption, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality targets
- Develop low energy cooling and design solutions to provide resilient, healthy and thermally comfortable indoor environments (both new and refurbished buildings)
- Develop methodologies for heat wave risk assessment of buildings
- Design, run and analyse parametric building energy simulations to evaluate different climate change coping strategies and scenarios, as well as to evaluate the potential impact of user behaviour on the energy performance gap
- Contribute to the definition of pilot implementation in real buildings and of laboratory tests aimed at providing experimental validation to those strategies
- Contribute to evaluate the resilience, co-benefits and cost-effectiveness of the strategies and solutions across the entire life cycle of the building
General tasks:
- Collaborate with research and industry partners as well as with public authorities in research projects at regional, national, and international level
- Collaborate with industry in product development and design
- Support the acquisition and management of research projects
- Supervise Master (and PhD co-supervision) students and internships
- Write scientific publications and project reports (deliverables, etc.)
- Engage with wider dissemination of the results
**Requirements**:
- PhD with a focus on building performance analysis (especially on ventilation for IAQ and thermal comfort), or equivalent experience gained in industrial/construction sector
- Good knowledge of ventilation principles, fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer in buildings
- Demonstrated experience in developing whole building energy models (using EnergyPlus, Trnsys, or other equivalent detailed tools for dynamic simulation)
- Experience with parametric analysis on building energy models using for example Grasshopper tools (desirable, but not essential)
- Research skills, with demonstrated experience in conducting: literature searches, simulation experiment design, building performance simulation and data analysis are desirable
- Interest in building resilience, smart ventilation, indoor comfort and low energy cooling design
- Experience with Python (or similar such as R) is desirable, but not essential
- Very good knowledge of English, written and spoken; Italian or German are desirable, but not essential
- Leadership in peer-reviewed publications is an asset
- Ability to carry out tasks autonomously
- Pro-activity
