The OPS Family Support Worker provides breastfeeding education and support to Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clients in various locations throughout the county. This position will be in Naples WIC headquarters; however, may work in Immokalee on occasions. Position provides services in the WIC Program in accordance with the policies of the state WIC Program and regulations as stated in DHM 150-24. Assignment of duty station, hours and days worked may vary as needed. This position is part-time and anticipated to work 16 hours per week. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Community Health Workers Supervisor.
Responsibilities: Educate WIC pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum mothers and family members on breastfeeding-related issues in assigned sites and by telephone; at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC agency.Provide basic breastfeeding information and support to WIC mothers to help them to successfully establish breastfeeding, overcome common barriers to breastfeeding, and prevent and handle common breastfeeding problems or concerns.Assist in breastfeeding classes and facilitate support groups.Maintain the breastfeeding warmline after hours; triage, give appointments and/or counsel as appropriate.Document breastfeeding contacts in the FL-Wise system in accordance with department policy. Documentation is accurate, clear, and legible for all contacts made with WIC clients.Manage caseload of assigned WIC clients and contact clients according to established procedures, maintaining client confidentiality.Coordinate services for clients and make referrals to appropriate agencies as needed.Assist the local WIC agency in outreach, promoting breastfeeding through special projects and duties as assigned.Understand WIC eligibility criteria and programmatic requirements in order to answer basic questions about WIC and make appropriate referrals.Attend mandatory and scheduled trainings. Adhere to FDOH Collier County policies and procedures pertaining to client confidentiality and data security.Accurate and timely submission of Employee Activity Record (EARs), time records, travel logs, monthly report of activities and other reports to supervisor.Answer telephones, file and perform travel in relation to above duties and for professional development.Perform other related duties as assigned.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react the way they do.Ability to effectively convey information verbally to others.Skill in listening to what other people are saying and asking questions as appropriate.Ability to actively look for ways to help people.Ability to identify the nature of problems.Skill in multiple approaches when learning or teaching new things.Knowledge of how to find information and identifying essential information.Communicate effectively with others in writing as indicated by the needs of the audience.Skill in assessing how well one is doing when learning or doing something.Ability to adjust actions in relation to others' actions.Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including needs assessment techniques, quality service standards, alternative delivery systems, and customer satisfaction evaluation techniques.Knowledge of human behavior and performance, mental processes, psychological research methods, and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems.Qualifications: Required: Bi-lingual in English/Spanish or English/Creole.Breastfed at least one child within the last 5 years.High school diploma or GED.Willing to be on-call at night or weekends (up to 9pm to at night and weekends 8am to 9pm).Reliable transportation that you are willing to use for work-related purposes.Emergency Duty - Incumbent may be required to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.Preferred: Florida Department of Health Mission, Vision, and Values: Mission: To protect, promote & improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county & community efforts.
