The Town of Vassalboro is seeking a new Director of Public Works. This is a supervisory and practical work position directing the work of a crew of equipment operators and workers engaged in public works construction and maintenance operations.
The Director supervises and assists the crew in the various operations of the Department. Work involves snow removal and sanding, ensuring that roads are made according to prescribed lines and grades and in compliance. This position requires a practical knowledge of road construction materials and methods, construction equipment operation, and the ability to read and interpret engineering road plans. Work is performed with general independence under the supervision of the Town Manager.
The Town is seeking candidates with considerable knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques commonly used in road construction and road clearing activities; knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety precautions of the work; working knowledge of the operation of construction equipment such as trucks and front end-loaders used in road construction work, and ability to supervise and direct the activities of employees engaged in the operation and maintenance of such equipment.
The Director must have a valid Class B license and physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of the class and ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Experience as a labor foreman on major road construction and maintenance activities, completion of high school, preferably supplemented by technical training, is required.
