Bozen/Bolzano InternshipInstitute for Alpine Environment The Institute for Alpine Environment performs problem-oriented research of mountain environments in the fields of landscape ecology, global change, biodiversity, ecosystem services and sustainable development. "Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol" (BMS) invites applications for the position of intern in the field of botany. The ideal candidate should have profound knowledge of the Central-European and/or Alpine flora and vegetation, as well as experience with geographical information systems (GIS). The investigation area will be the whole region of South Tyrol (ITA), with the working location in Bolzano/Bozen.
BMS is an ongoing survey of biodiversity that serves as basic research and is intended to provide a scientific base for political decisions concerning spatial planning, agriculture, and nature conservation. BMS surveys animal and plant groups that react sensitively to climate and/or land-use changes at the habitat and landscape level. These surveys occur in 320 terrestrial and more than 100 aquatic sites distributed over the entire province of South Tyrol (7400 km²), including a large share of the diversity of habitats in the region. Tasks:Support in botanical surveys and habitat surveys for the season 2025 within the monitoring standard program and special projects of the Biodiversity Monitoring.Support of field work for other taxonomical groups, e.g., mounting bat loggers, installing pitfall traps.Support in digitalization and management of botanical and habitat field data.Requirements:Bachelor/master's degree in biology, Environmental Sciences, or similar (master's degree obtained not more than one year ago).Willingness to work in alpine areas.Availability to work flexible hours when field work requires it.Good knowledge of inner-Alpine flora and vegetation.Good knowledge in geographical information systems (Arc GIS/QGIS).Experience in biodiversity monitoring programs is advantageous for plant species knowledge (e.g., Österreichisches Freilandbotanik-Zertifikat, Schweizer Feldbotanik-Zertifikat).Good English skills; additional skills in German and Italian are advantageous.Good interpersonal and collaborative skills to integrate into a working group.Efficient organization skills.We offer:Internship contract for 3 to 6 months (spring – autumn, 2025).Possibility to include the gained data into a master thesis.State-of-the-art technical facilities (soft- and hardware, communication tools).Opportunity to work in a young interdisciplinary team.Attractive living and working conditions (Great Place to Work).How to apply:Interested candidates should submit their application (CV, cover letter, and further relevant documents) by 07.01.2025.
