Commitment & contract: Insert fixed-term employee contract Step into a world of endless possibilities, together let's leave something for the future At IIT, we are committed to advancing human-centered Science and Technology to address the most urgent societal challenges of our era. We foster excellence in both fundamental and applied research, spanning fields such as neuroscience and cognition, humanoid technologies and robotics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and material sciences, offering a truly interdisciplinary scientific experience. Our approach integrates cutting-edge tools and technology, empowering researchers to push the limits of knowledge and innovation. With us, your curiosity will know no bounds. We are dedicated to providing equal employment opportunities and fostering diversity in all its forms, creating an inclusive environment. We value the unique experiences, knowledge, backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives of our people. By embracing diversity, we believe science can achieve its fullest potential. THE ROLE You will be working in a multi-disciplinary group, where people with different backgrounds collaborate, each with their own expertise, to support IIT research activity. The Infrastructure Management Office of the ICT Directorate coordinated by Stefano Bencetti is a multi-disciplinary group where people design, develop, deploy, and maintain systems to support services aimed at research or administrative users, in close collaboration with the Research Organization Directorate. IIT strongly believes that data organization, documentation and dissemination (even in an open manner when possible) became crucial to enable cutting-edge research, by enhancing research reproducibility and achieving effectiveness in the long term. Therefore, IIT has been launching a Research Data Management (RDM) institutional plan aimed at unlocking the full potential of research data, as the main fuel to innovative data-driven scientific approaches. The IIT strategic plan 2024-2029 has further strengthened IIT's commitment in the RDM field by confirming initiatives oriented to research-data driven and AI/ML data-ready. This plan includes investments in three main directions: infrastructures and tools, policies and guidelines, and training and support. Driven by this plan, IIT has been developing infrastructures to enable storage of large amounts of data, high-performance computing and preservation and sharing of research data: On one side, IIT has adopted an institutional repository, available to IIT scientists to describe datasets with standard and rich metadata, preserve and share them following the European philosophy "as open as possible, as closed as necessary." On the other side, IIT has been deploying a new enterprise-level on-premises storage infrastructure, consisting of 5 PB of usable backed-up storage space, decentralized across 14 IIT centers with centralized monitoring and management of data, metadata, and security. IIT can also leverage state-of-the-art High-Performance Computing (HPC) services available to IIT researchers in all domains. Moreover, the integration of HPC facilities and storage will enable the future development of High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA) applications. In this context, the hiring of a mid-senior expertise system engineer is foreseen for the coming years. We aim at implementing an ecosystem of integrated services and tools for RDM, grounded on a shared layer of (meta)data standards and a technical infrastructure that can be sketched as a layered architecture of hardware, software and service components. You will play a key role in the design, development and application of innovative methods and tools to manage research data and processes in a heterogeneous research domain. Our strategy requires creating a unified RDM environment that allows researchers to: Easily access scientific data from various sources. Manage data efficiently and securely. Share data with other researchers. Preserve and reuse data for the future. Enable data-driven research and AI tools integration. Within the team, your main responsibilities will be: Maintaining and integrating various systems, including development and maintenance of scripts and automation for storage systems. Hosting, organization, configuration and migration of data management systems and association of metadata to the relevant data set via automated systems. Management of authentication and authorization (Identity and Access Management) on systems and among systems. Monitoring and testing system operations and performance. Ensuring systems compliance with established quality and safety standards. Collaboration in the management of flow of scientific data from acquisition tools (such as laboratory instruments) towards storage systems. Working with researchers to understand the dataset to be archived (data life cycle from live to frozen data, peculiarities or intrinsic characteristics of data depending on the specific domain, size of the data collected, timing for saving and backup of data, etc.). ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Engineering or related disciplines. At least 3 years of experience in system administration. Proven experience in integrating storage and data management systems. Knowledge of operating systems such as Linux, UNIX, Windows. Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. bash, Python). Knowledge in the security field. Willingness to learn new technologies. Strong focus on stakeholder needs and expectations. Good command of the English language. ADDITIONAL SKILLS Knowledge of tools for IT automation (e.g. Ansible). Knowledge of IBM suite of data management Spectrum Scale, Spectrum Discovery, Spectrum Control. Knowledge or experience in integration of research electronic laboratory notebooks and storage. Knowledge of modern authentication protocols for web authentication and federation. Knowledge of containerized deployments (e.g. Kubernetes) and virtualization platforms (e.g. VMware, Proxmox). Knowledge of Git versioning system. Knowledge of main cloud platforms (such as AWS, Microsoft Azure). Knowledge of basic Layer 2 and 3 networking. Ability to work in a challenging and international environment. Capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment. Analytical reasoning skills and a growth mindset. COMPENSATION PACKAGE A yearly gross salary ranging between 27,000 and 37,000 euros, which may include a bonus option depending on your role and contract. Private health care coverage depending on your role and contract. Two days of teleworking per week and flexible working hours are available for certain roles. Please submit your application using the online form and including a detailed CV. Organization Information and Communication Technology Directorate - Infrastructure Management Office J-18808-Ljbffr
