The Opportunity
We are looking for a Senior Sustainability Consultant - Data Center to join our Sustainable Development team within Arup Milan Office.
You will join a team that has established a reputation for supporting both Italian and international Data Center projects providing advisory and consulting services to clients to deliver on their sustainability objectives and our own commitments to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the European sustainable agenda.
We are looking for a climate & sustainability services professional to support our clients to develop pathways, frameworks, implementation plans and strategies to achieve their climate objectives as well as fostering sustainability innovation in the data center industry. This role involves engaging with Arup's broad portfolio of projects within the Science, Industry and Technology market and across the infrastructure, buildings, cities, transport, energy and water sectors in Italy and abroad.
This senior professional will help to lead and grow the existing Data Center sustainability team, working alongside recognized sustainability and design leaders, as well as our Italian and regional business leaders.
As a Senior Sustainability Consultant, you will:
Lead and deliver specialist climate and sustainability services for Data Center's clients and projects, often working as part of a multidisciplinary team with a Science, Industry and Technology focus.
Develop and implement sustainability framework, concepts and strategies to support Arup design teams to deliver data center projects characterized by high sustainability ambitions
Advice and lead the integration of energy, renewable, carbon, materials and water sustainability strategies for data center projects, liaising with internal and external multidisciplinary teams
Lead and deliver sustainability certifications for data canter campuses and buildings
Conduct opportunity assessments for clients across a broad spectrum of sustainability topics and contribute to the development of implementation plans that result from these assessments.
Develop GHG baseline methodologies, emissions assessments and reduction strategies
Advise on certification approaches, EU taxonomy, TCFD reporting frameworks, science-based target methodologies
Coordinate climate and sustainability teams (3-5 people) to deliver the previous services
Support the leadership of the team and group in developing business relationships with existing and new clients, prepare proposals and win new jobs.
Communicate sustainability requirements to internal and external team members, including workshop facilitation.
Produce reports providing advice and guidance to clients and project teams.
Is this role right for you?
We're looking for someone who is passionate about sustainable development agendas and future trends across the broad spectrum of environmental, social and governance issues, sustainability reporting and reporting standards, sustainability strategy and appraisal, and environmental legislation within the design and construction context. You'll also need:
Master's degree in engineering or environmental sciences or other relevant fields of study.
10+ years of experience, and to be able to work on your own initiative and manage small to medium teams of people.
3+ years' experience in delivering sustainability strategies for Data Center projects
LEED AP with experience of LEED certifications for data centers and mission critical facilities.
Other green building accreditations (WELL, Fitwel, BREEAM, etc.) is a plus.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of sustainability initiatives for Data Center projects.
Knowledge of greenhouse gas accounting principles and application in the Data Center sector, including Scope 3 categories.
Knowledge of the GHG protocol, EU Taxonomy, TCFD reporting frameworks, science-based target setting and WLCA.
Client-facing management, communication and good interpersonal skills.
Membership with a relevant professional body.
Experience of preparing commercial bids / bid responses, winning work.
Project and commercial management experience, including project planning and budgeting
Fluent in both English and Italian language.
