Smiths Interconnect is a leading provider of technically differentiated electronic components, subsystems, microwave and radio frequency products that connect, protect and control critical applications in the commercial aviation, defence, space, medical, rail, semiconductor test and industrial markets.Employing over 2,000 people globally, our in-house capabilities encompass design, development, manufacturing and testing to respond quickly and accurately to customer's needs and provide the most reliable connectivity solutions.Job DescriptionResponsible for designing and developing manufacturing processes for connectors realization by studying product requirements and defining manufacturing processes and cost, particularly related to automation, designing and realizing machines, groups toolings and test equipment, assessing best process flow, taking measurements, analyzing data and testing manufacturing methods in compliance with lean concepts.The Automation Mechanical Designer is a key role to drive and support transition from high manual labour application to automated machines/lines, as well as to design and develop automated solutions for high precision manual processes enhancing technical support for Industry 4.0 implementation.Responsible for cost analysis of products, CWS redaction/update and related P-FMEA studies.Needs full awareness of safety requirements at design and implementation level to contribute to safety requirements implementation.Duties ResponsibilitiesOperational feasibility and study including manufacturing costs.Preliminary manufacturing concepts and operational reviews (FMEA).Finalization of operational concept.Manufacturing processes implementation by studying product requirements, researching, designing, modifying and testing manufacturing methods and equipment.Design automated machines, specific complex groups, interacting with technical part suppliers, asking for parts from external workshops providing related documents (i.e.
drawings, specifications).General support to lab/test activities as required, e.g.
preparation commissioning of automated test rigs, preparation of test components (design of test adaptors/fixtures, other relevant CAD design work).Specialization in automation group design and supplier for automation tools management.Along with other team members, contribute to maintaining a safe and efficient working environment, including following appropriate HSE procedures/performance of risk assessments as appropriate, safety assessments.Be a promoter of a culture of lean and continuous improvement in work processes.Be one of the drivers of change in process implementation.The IndividualExperience in mechanical design for product realization companies (automation/special machine design experience preferable).Proficiency with CAD (Solidworks preferred, Pro/Engineer experience is a plus).Very strong design, imagination and practical skills, ability to imagine, think and design manufacturing tools according to product target costs/volume.Proficiency in toleration analysis and mechanical studies.Experience in automation group design and validation.Proficiency with Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office programs.Strong organizational and analytical skills.Strong communication and interpersonal skills.Curious, practical, open-minded; this role will have to implement Industry 4.0 and lean approaches into the manufacturing processes.Diversity InclusionWe believe that different perspectives and backgrounds are what make a company flourish.
