JOB DESCRIPTIONThe 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are global objectives that will shape national development plans over the next 15 years.
From ending poverty and hunger to responding to climate change and sustaining our natural resources, food and agriculture lies at the heart of the 2030 Agenda.
The FAO Office of Sustainable Development Goals (OSG) coordinates FAO engagement in the 2030 Agenda follow-up and review, working closely with concerned units across the Organization.The new FAO Strategic Framework (SF) envisions A world free from hunger and malnutrition where food and agriculture contribute to improving the living standards of all, especially the poorest, in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner.
The strategic narrative guiding the Strategic Framework is the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.The SDGs are central in FAOs overall theory of change.
Key SDGs and their indicators, including all indicators for which FAO is custodian or contributing agency, are used to promote focus, track progress and express aspirations at the level of medium/long-term outcome/impact.
Twenty Programme Priority Areas (PPAs) guide the programmes that FAO will implement under the four betters to fill critical gaps and put in place the conditions needed to drive the changes that will ultimately contribute to the achievement of the specific SDG targets.Reporting LinesThe SDGs Communication and Advocacy Specialist will report to the Director, Office of Sustainable Development Goals.Technical FocusThe FAOs work on SDGs covers various service lines including, monitoring and reporting progress, building capacity of countries to follow up and review the 2030 Agenda in areas of FAO work and supporting interventions to improve key SDG targets at national, regional and global level.
The selected consultant/PSA will be responsible for designing and implementing a coherent communication strategy for the recently established FAOs Office of SDGs to enhance public outreach, effectiveness and visibility of Plan of Work, and institutional awareness of integrative solutions for supporting SDGs based agrifood transformation.
The consultant/PSA will also support advocacy and communications activities of the newly established Coordination Hub following the UN Food Systems Summit.Tasks and responsibilitiesIn close cooperation and consultation with relevant divisions, especially with FAOs Office Of Communications:
The overarching objectives of the work are to:
Increase awareness of the work and achievements of FAOs work on the SDGs within the UN system and general public.Promote the organization's mandate and areas of SDGs work under the FourBetters to foster greater information and knowledge exchange with key stakeholders.Promote and advocate food-systems messages as per the work of the UN Food Systems Summit Coordination Hub which is also placed under the OSGThe consultant will carry out the following activities as appropriate:
Prepare key messages for multiple stakeholders through a participatory process, specifically targeting vulnerable groups.Review the online site of FAO on SDGs and develop a new structure/content to correspond to the work of the OSG and the work of FAO on SDGsSupport preparation, production and dissemination of engaging multimedia material on issues related to agrifood systems to be used on corporate multilingual social media channels.Produce and disseminate short articles to contribute to FAOs various documents and other channels in partnership with the team.Support public communications activities through the drafting of talking points, speeches, press releases, Op-Eds, interviews, events, photos and other communication products, including submission of country focus and other requests to FAO OSG.Assist with the revision and editing of texts and/or documents to be published by the team.Assist with the dissemination of results of programs, projects and activities undertaken by the OSG Office.Support the organization of press conferences when new reports are launched and prepare press releases with key takeaways from these reports.Support the organization of advocacy events on SDGs and FAO (prepare concept notes, programs and agendas, liaise with potential speakers etc.
)Support advocacy within the UN System to ensure continued commitment and prioritization of a food systems approach by UN agencies.Act as focal point for the FAO Office of Communications.Perform other related tasks as per request Expected outputs:
A communication and advocacy action agenda on FAO work on SDGs and how they are the basis for agrifood transformations;A revised and updated online presence of FAO SDGs work (under the FAO corporate site).
The consultant will be responsible for the structure and content to be provided to the IT experts to populate the relevant web pages.Advocacy events developed and deliveredAdvocacy materials prepared (policy briefs, research papers, media articles, multimedia graphs).Outreach inputs to HLPF, Regional Sustainable Development Fora (RSDFs) and relevant reports.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWINGMinimum Requirements University degree in communications, advocacy, art, marketing, sustainable development or related areas.At least 5 years of relevant experience on communication and advocacy work in the areas of sustainable, development and/or agrifood systems;Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other FAO languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) for Consultants.
Working knowledge of English is sufficient for PSA.SBS.
