Bozen/Bolzano - Full-time Institute for Earth Observation Short description of the position: Eurac Research is an interdisciplinary research center located in Bolzano, Italy. At the Institute for Earth Observation (EO), we conduct research on monitoring environmental parameters and processes with Earth observation and climate data in mountain regions. We are looking for a senior researcher to develop scientific concepts and algorithms in the field of Earth Observation within the activities of the group 'Advanced Computing' of the institute. The group focuses on advancing data science related to Earth observation data and processing, including data management and organization following FAIR data principles, scalable data processing, cloud-native solutions, and integration of data-driven and physics-based modeling.
The senior researcher will support the group in researching Big Earth Observation Data Science. The candidate should be experienced in geospatial computing and have a good understanding of Earth Observation data. We expect the senior researcher to coordinate research projects as a technical lead and publish results following open science principles, including code, data, and scientific publications. There are currently two main areas of research and development: one focusing on data-driven modeling integrated with classical physics-based modeling, and the second on scalable computing, including data and processing federation. Our ideal candidate should have a strong interest and background in one of these topics.
Tasks: Contribute to the strategic development of the group by identifying research problems and strategic opportunities. Contribute to project acquisition and management of research projects. Advise on and develop technical solutions in the field of EO data science in cloud-native environments. Consolidate research output by contributing to scientific publications and participating in relevant international conferences.
