Description of the research activity: The main goal of the project is to develop and validate a method to predict the kinematics of each bearing component, taking into consideration contact and hydraulic forces, i.e., an improved LaMBDA model integrated with hydraulic forces. To achieve this main goal, the following sub-goals need to be met:
A Design of Experiment (DoE) that enables the exploration of several operating conditions within the constraints of project resources has to be defined. The main parameters influencing hydraulic forces have to be included.A CFD model capable of calculating the hydraulic forces on each bearing component under the operating conditions established in the DoE has to be developed.A database of hydraulic forces as a function of the covering the entire DoE parameters has to be built, exploiting the CFD simulation results.An experimental campaign testing the operating conditions delineated in the DoE has to be performed. The goal of this campaign is to measure the kinematics of the bearing components, the operating temperature, and the overall resistant torque due to hydraulic forces (i.e., the hydraulic torque).The CFD model has to be validated by comparing the numerical and the experimental results in terms of hydraulic torque.A methodology for integrating the hydraulic forces within LaMBDA has to be developed. In this way, an improved version of LaMBDA capable of considering both contact and hydraulic forces can be fine-tuned.Kinematics resulting from the newly developed methodology have to be compared with experimentally measured kinematics.
