Research Activity Description: We will investigate symbionts of psyllids across the whole superfamily Psylloidea.
We will assess the diversity of bacterial symbionts between closely and distantly related psyllid taxa and uncover the evolutionary history of symbiont origin, acquisitions, replacements, and losses.
Specifically, we will (1) reconstruct the co-evolutionary history of psyllids with their co-primary symbionts and identify events of symbiont replacements, (2) determine the impact of co-primary symbiont acquisition and loss on primary symbiont evolution, and (3) determine nutritional and defensive capabilities of co-primary symbionts of psyllids by using a combination of whole genome sequencing, phylogenetic reconstructions, fluorescence microscopy, and metabolomic assays.
