The job role of "R&D Manager - Pet Food & Pharmaceutical" is aimed at someone who is intimately familiar with formulation in the chemical and food industries.
The company operates in the pharmaceutical Pet sector for the formulation of free-sale products as well as medical products that can be sold exclusively with a veterinary doctor's prescription, and in the food sector for the production of pet food.
The role primarily involves working with sales, formulating new blends/products based on customer needs, validating the functionality of blends/products in finished product applications, defining blend/product specifications and performance criteria testing, and assisting operations in scaling up countertop mix/product recipes to full-scale production.
The candidate will be familiar with general consumer trends, food and pharmaceutical regulations, and all basic safety protocols, and must be able to communicate effectively with technical and sales team members.
Responsibilities Follows direction and works independently on projects.
Definition of the parameters and analytical plans of the formulas developed and the raw materials used.
Formulation of new PET care products/product lines.
Formulation of new PET pharmaceutical products/product lines, including hair & skin care cosmetic lines.
Review of formulations of products on the market.
Conducts investigations using established testing methods and procedures.
Communicates well with varied audiences with attention to detail.
Executes experimental plans and prepares reports and presentations.
Excellent problem-solving and project management skills.
Works well with groups within the company (quality, supply chain, business development, sales, and marketing).
Seeks opportunities for continued learning in food ingredients and applications, pharmaceutical requirements, analytical testing, project management, and technical presentations.
Interacts with the manager and possibly with management and other company functions for the definition of strategies for the conception, creation, implementation, and launch of new products.
Conducts market research.
Conducts stability studies and drafts related protocols and reports.
Researches and analyzes new experimental raw materials in the PET care sector.
Uses, calibrates, and cleans existing equipment.
Drafts specifications/technical sheets.
Drafts bills of materials.
Drafts work instructions for new equipment and updates work instructions for existing equipment.
Develops, executes, and monitors R&D budget.
Provides technical expertise to support R&D objectives.
Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or related field; preferably with a Master specialization.
Minimum of 7 years experience (10 years preferred) in the same role or other related fields.
Hands-on blend formulation experience.
Knowledge of food processing and operations.
Familiarity with pharmaceutical and pet food product lines.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
Experience supervising/mentoring others.
Highly proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook.
Technical report writing skills.
Comfortable working with financial data and developing financial plans.
Able to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects.
Business acumen.
Able to mentor and coach others.
Effective communication skills in both oral and written form.
