Background: NRC has provided first-line humanitarian response since 2021 with multisector activities in shelter, education, livelihoods and food security, and information, counselling and legal assistance. Our focus is on supporting people in hard-to-reach areas, working in partnership with authorities and local actors. We are piloting cash-based interventions with displaced populations living in host communities. NRC offers a comprehensive response for returnees and IDPs of high need, addressing their food security, livelihood, shelter, education, ICLA, and water, hygiene and sanitation needs and also responding to emergencies through NRC's six core competencies; Shelter, Education, Livelihoods and Food Security, WASH and Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA) and Protection from Violence.
NRC Somalia is part of NRC's East & South Africa regional operation which comprises of large-scale multi-country humanitarian and early recovery interventions spread across Ten countries (Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan and Mozambique). NRC's overall strategy in the region is to enhance protection and promote the rights of displaced people in humanitarian need by improving living conditions and seeking durable solutions. The regional office is based in Nairobi and works with country programmes to ensure standardization of programmatic and operational approaches, promote multi-country programming and ensure quality and coordination.
Overview: The Protection Case Worker plays a crucial role in safeguarding the safety, well-being, and rights of vulnerable individuals and groups within the target locations specifically Bossaso IDPs. This position is responsible for providing direct support, advocacy, and case management services to vulnerable IDPs, contributing to a coordinated and effective protection response within the context of the organization's overall program.
Generic Responsibilities: Ensure adherence with NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines.Implement delegated protection project portfolio according to plan of action.Prepare and develop status reports as required by management.Ensure proper filing of documents.Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need and explore and assess new and better ways to assist.Promote and share ideas for technical improvement.Specific Responsibilities: Case Management:Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients' protection concerns and needs.Identify the most appropriate and vulnerable individuals and groups facing protection concerns and issues.Refer the clients to the service providers or facilitate access to services that address clients' identified needs, such as psychosocial support, health and livelihood support.Regularly monitor and review the progress of cases.Maintain accurate and confidential case records, including documentation of assessments, case plans, service provision, and progress updates.Coordinate and collaborate with relevant service providers with coordination NRC protection teams such as protection service providers and improve referral mechanisms.Advocate for clients' rights and access to services, working to address barriers and promote their well-being.Refer psychosocial support service providers to provide the client counseling.Empower clients to make informed decisions and actively participate in the case management process.Assist clients in navigating legal processes, including referrals for legal aid and support during legal proceedings.Raise awareness about protection issues within the community and advocate for policy changes to improve protection outcomes.Coordination and Reporting: Participate in case conferences, coordination meetings, and regular information sharing with relevant stakeholders.Collaborate with other organizations, government agencies, and community leaders to ensure a coordinated and effective response to protection concerns.Generate regular reports on case progress, outcomes, and challenges, as required by the organization or funding agencies.Report weekly & monthly (or more often, if required) on activities and results to the relevant NRC Protection staff.Carry out administrative tasks as agreed upon.Perform any other task as assigned by NRC management.Qualifications: Diploma in social science, social worker, development studies, psychosocial counselling or related field of study.Minimum of 2 years relevant working experience in the field of protection and humanitarian program.Experience from working as a case worker in protection in a humanitarian/recovery context.Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.Strong analysis skills (qualitative and quantitative).Strong cultural awareness and sensitivity.Flexible and creative.Ability and willingness to work and live in challenging conditions.What We Offer: Contract period: 3 months contract, with possibility of extension.
Salary/benefits: Casual Contract.
Duty station: Bossaso, Somalia.
