YOUR TEAM As selected candidate, you will work in the Smart Materials research unit of Dr. Athanassia Athanassiou, within the Water Technologies group led by Despina Fragouli. You will be part of a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where physicists, chemists, biologists, biotechnologists, as well as materials, chemical, mechanical and biomedical engineers, collaborate, use and expand their own expertise, to conduct common research.
The research carried out at Smart Materials focuses on the development of new composite materials and devices through the combination of biopolymers and natural polymers with organic and inorganic micro or nanofillers. Both the chemistry and the structure of the developed materials are controlled to achieve precise properties adjusted to the needs of various application fields, which include Green and sustainable composites, Nanocomposites, Smart composite materials for sensing, Surface engineering and adhesion, Multifunctional polymeric foams and aerogels, Smart fabrics and paper, Materials for safe environment, Food packaging, Materials for regenerative medicine. Since polymers are the main building blocks of the developed structures, natural, bioderived and biodegradable polymers are primarily used to develop novel composite materials with accurately modulated properties, but at the same time with minimal environmental impact. The group has developed a vast variety of techniques and owns state of the art instrumentation for the development and characterization of the composites systems and devices. Close collaborations exist with industry, universities, and research centers in Italy and abroad.
Your Responsibilities Development of sustainable polymeric and composite materials as well as nanomaterials with specifically designed chemical and structural properties.Utilization of these materials for the targeted interaction and highly efficient remediation of common and emerging pollutants from water.Protection of created intellectual property by patents.Publication of results in high impact peer-review scientific journals.ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS A PhD in one of the following areas with order of preference: Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, and similar disciplines, with postdoctoral experience up to 4 years.Documented experience in materials chemistry or nanomaterials for water remediation, in organic and polymeric materials, in polymer nanocomposites, in morphological and spectroscopic characterization techniques.Experience in polymer science.Experience in materials characterizations.A strong publication record.The ability to properly report, organize and publish research data.Documented experience in coaching junior scientists.Excellent spoken and written English.ADDITIONAL SKILLS Experience in the development and characterization of polymeric porous materials such as foams and membranes.Strong problem-solving attitude.High motivation to learn.Spirit of innovation and creativity.Good time and priority management.Ability to work in a challenging and international environment.Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment.COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Competitive salary package for international standards.Private health care coverage (depending on your role and contract).Wide range of staff discounts.WHAT'S IN FOR YOU?
