DescriptionUnder minimal supervision, the Fisheries Oceanographer will perform lab and field research, project management and collaborative interactions, data analysis and manuscript preparation for diverse projects on the trophic ecology of pelagic food webs leading to larval fishes. Lead laboratory analyses and interpretations of compound-specific isotopic analyses of amino acids to assess food-web source nitrogen and trophic positions of fishes, fish larvae and zooplankton prey.
Lead and oversee student research assistants in the analyses of phytoplankton biomass and community composition by image-analysis epifluorescence and inverted microscopy, zooplankton biomass and elemental composition by established methods, and zooplankton grazing by gut pigment analyses and experimental techniques. Plan and organize results from the projects into reports and draft manuscripts as well as presentations at scientific meetings and workshops. Conduct shipboard research, as needed, in remote locations for durations of 4-6 weeks, including collaborative process experiments and sample collections for laboratory analyses.
QualificationsTheoretical and practical knowledge of functional groups of marine phytoplankton and zooplankton and their identifying characteristics.Advanced knowledge of larval fish ecology and trophic ecology of pelagic food webs. Demonstrated experience in compound-specific isotopic analyses of amino acids to assess food-web source nitrogen and trophic positions of fishes, fish larvae, and zooplankton prey.Advanced knowledge of microscopical methods, including epifluorescence and inverted techniques, for plankton biomass and community analyses. Experience in plankton biomass and community analyses.Extensive knowledge and experience in compound-specific stable isotopic techniques, including lyophilization, hydrolysis and purification of individual amino acids by HPLC, high-precision results with small sample sizes, theoretical and practical aspects of calculating trophic positions and food web source nitrogen.Proven experience at sea on research cruises and/or field experience. Ability to participate on research cruises up to 2 times per year, 4 to 6 weeks per cruise, working under moderate to rough seas (i.e., seasickness not disabling).Demonstrated knowledge and experience in shipboard sampling and experimental techniques for plankton and larval fishes.Strong ability to communicate effectively in writing, including research reports, technical aspects of proposals, and to lead authorship of scientific publications.Proficient knowledge of computer operating systems, data spreadsheets, word processing, plotting and presentation software (Mac or PC).
