Istitute for Alpine Environment Eurac Research is a private multidisciplinary research center located in Bolzano/Bozen (Italy), in the heart of the Italian Alps.
Founded in 1992, it aims to find solutions to pressing societal challenges: keeping societies healthy, fostering intact environments, promoting sustainable energy and developing well-functioning political and social systems.
Currently, it has over 650 employees and is organized in 11 Institutes and 7 Centers.
Within the Institute for Alpine Environment, we are looking for one ambitious and motivated intern to work as field assistant for the Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol project and in particular for the special project Fungal diversity in South Tyrol's forests.
The Institute for Alpine Environment performs problem-oriented research of mountain environments in the fields of landscape ecology, global change, biodiversity, ecosystem services and sustainable development.
The ideal candidate has experience in field activities in forest areas, forest ecology and inventory, fungal diversity survey, collection and identification of macrofungal specimens.
We offer one internship contract starting from July 2025 based at the headquarters of Eurac Research in Bolzano/Bozen with a duration of minimum 4 months (starting date is flexible).
Tasks: Assistance with fungal diversity survey for the 2025 season in collaboration with Italian mycologists from the local mycological association (Associazione Micologica Bresadola Bolzano)Support in the organization and logistics for the field work campaign (e.g., managing and preparation of gear and fieldwork material, coordinating assisting personnel) in the framework of the European project FunDiveDigitalization and management fungal diversity data, and preparation of datasetsOrganization and preparation of fungi specimen samples for further analysis and shippingAssistance in other forest biodiversity and inventory sampling activitiesDigitalization and analysis of forest inventory data collected in sample sitesRequirements: Bachelor/Master's degree in Forest Science, Environmental Sciences, Biology or similar.
Eligibility for the internship requires either being a current student or having earned a bachelor's or master's degree within one year before the start of the contract.Willingness and availability to work in alpine areas and to conduct field activities in alpine terrain.Efficient organization skills.Good interpersonal and collaborative skills to integrate in a working group and to interact with associated researchers from various institutions and with stakeholders.Good knowledge of forest botany, forest mensuration and forest inventory methodsSkills on identification of fungi specimens is advantageous.Italian and English skills are required.
