We have a longstanding research and development capability in Immunology and combining common pathways and underlying disease drivers across Respiratory and Immunology, AstraZeneca is following the science from chronic lung diseases to immunology-driven disease areas.
Our growing presence in Immunology is focused on five mid
- to late-stage franchises with multi-disease potential. The disease areas we're targeting include rheumatology (including type 1 interferon-driven diseases such as lupus), dermatology, gastroenterology diseases and systemic eosinophilic-driven diseases. Our ambition is to achieve disease modification and durable remission in these diseases for millions of patients worldwide.
Based on our strong belief in following the science and our commitment to patients, we are now exploring the possibility for some of these same molecules - along with several new molecules - to address significant unmet need within Immunology.
As Immunology Medical Lead you'll be responsible for improving patient outcomes through improved customer education and engagement. Based on an extensive understanding of immunology science and Lupus, you will take a leadership role in defining the long-term vision and strategic/ tactical plans in partnership with senior leaders.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As the Medical Lead based in Italy, you'll report into the Medical Area Head Respiratory & Immunology and play a critical role in facilitating strong relationships across the healthcare system with external scientific, medical, and patient communities and will build relationships with key customers through expert peer-to-peer engagements. You will provide medical leadership to ensure that regional decisions are pulled through at the local level.
The role includes the following responsibilities:
- Leading the development of customer-specific strategy, vision, objectives, and priorities based on overall franchise strategy
- Recruiting and leading a team of MSLs and create a filed medical plan in alignment with the Immunology medical strategy
- Functioning as a critical company point of contact for Immunology related activities for the medical community and implement KOL strategy in Italy
- Recruiting and integrating external knowledge into internal development initiatives in collaboration with matrix colleagues
- Maintaining high levels of understanding across scientific, clinical, health economic and technical expertise
- Building a best in class global medical organization to become a respected leader in pharmaceutical industry and the Immunology therapeutic area while cultivating an inclusive high-performance environment that values and leverages diversity
- Managing all activities and Account relationship according with Company Values, Code of Conduct, Guidelines/Internal procedures and Italian legislation
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- MD Degree (preferred) or Advanced Clinical/Science Degree required (e.g., PharmD, PhD, MSN, MPH, etc.)
- At least 5 years of related work experience (clinical, managed care, or industry experience)
- Immunology therapeutic area expertise and business acumen required
- Demonstrated evidence of successfully leading and managing teams that deliver measurable results
- Demonstrate deep scientific expertise about LES therapeutic area and the growing immunology franchise and ensure that strong relationships are developed with key external scientific and medical customers and organizations in the region
- Deep understanding of the healthcare landscape, key competitors and marketplace factors and dynamics
- Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, prioritizing and management of high-level initiatives and projects to consistently deliver results
- Embraces an agile mindset to develop necessary processes to ensure consistent deliverables. Knows how to organize people and activities effectively to achieve impactful outcomes.
- Financial acumen: capable of driving and managing budget responsibilities
- Proven strong influencing skills and stakeholder management
- Experienced and comfortable working in a matrix environment
- Demonstrates structured and measured leadership, interactions and decision-making during periods of high intensity in external or internal deliberations
- A flexible, team orientated attitude, willing to contribute own skills to deliver AstraZeneca priority projects
- Proficiency in English and Italian
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
- Launch experience in first to market product category preferred
