Mission The Geotechnical Laboratory Technician focuses on supporting geotechnical engineering projects by conducting tests on soil and rock samples in a laboratory setting.
Your work will contribute to the assessment of subsurface conditions, the evaluation of engineering properties, and the development of geotechnical recommendations for construction and infrastructure projects.
Key Accountabilities Sample Preparation: Receive, log, and label soil and rock samples collected from field investigations or construction sites.
Prepare samples for testing by following established procedures, including drying, sieving, and milling as necessary to ensure consistency and accuracy of test results.
Geotechnical Testing: Perform a variety of geotechnical tests on soil and rock samples, including but not limited to: Atterberg Limits tests (liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index) Grain size analysis (sieve analysis, hydrometer analysis) Proctor compaction tests Consolidation tests Direct shear tests Triaxial compression tests Unconfined compression tests Point load tests Rock mass classification tests (e.g., RQD, UCS) Operate laboratory equipment and instruments according to standard procedures and safety guidelines to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
Data Analysis and Reporting: Record test data, observations, and relevant parameters accurately and legibly in laboratory notebooks or electronic databases.
Analyze test results, interpret findings, and prepare summary reports documenting test procedures, results, and conclusions.
Collaborate with geotechnical engineers and project managers to communicate test findings and contribute to the development of geotechnical recommendations and design parameters.
Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC): Implement quality control measures to ensure the integrity and accuracy of laboratory testing procedures and results.
Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment regularly to meet industry standards and accreditation requirements.
Participate in proficiency testing programs and internal audits to validate laboratory performance and compliance with applicable regulations.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to minimize risks associated with laboratory operations, handling of hazardous materials, and use of equipment.
Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment, including proper storage and disposal of samples and chemicals, to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
Education High School Diploma/GED Qualifications Diploma in Surveying, Geotechnics, or Construction Previous experience working in a geotechnical laboratory environment performing soil and rock testing is an advantage.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized testing protocols and procedures.
Basic knowledge of laboratory testing methods and equipments.
