Organizational Setting The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) is responsible for the economic, social, institutional, governance and policy aspects of FAO's activities related to fisheries and aquaculture and their development, with particular emphasis on human well-being, food security and poverty reduction; post-harvest utilization, marketing and trade with due regard to the protection of the environment, food security and the well-being of fishing communities; collection, compilation, validation, trend analysis and dissemination of the best available and up-to-date fishery statistics and for the syndication of the FAO information on all aspects of world fisheries and aquaculture.
The Division is also responsible for FAO's activities related to the management and conservation of the living aquatic resources used by fisheries and aquaculture, including the biodiversity and ecosystem maintenance, with particular emphasis on most vulnerable and threatened species and habitats; management of responsible fisheries and aquaculture in accordance with modern management standards and best practices; development of fisheries technology, with due regard to the protection of the environment, food security and the well-being of fishing communities, including the safety of fishers and fishing vessels.
The post is located in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division, NFI, in the Resilience Team, NFISR, at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, leading the climate change, disaster risk management - reduction, as well as the biodiversity areas of work within NFI.
Reporting Lines The Fishery Officer (Climate Change) reports to the NFISR Fishery Resources Officer in charge of coordinating the climate change work across the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division.
Technical Focus Responses to climate change impacts on fisheries and aquaculture.
Key Results Collection and analysis of information, data and statistics and project/meeting services to support programme projects, products and services.
Key Functions - Collects and analyses relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and/or statistics to support the delivery of programme projects, as well as products and services.
- Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports and edits/revises technical/scientific documents.
- Participates in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems.
- Updates databases and web pages.
- Participates in multidisciplinary project/work teams.
- Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars, etc.
- Participates in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.
Specific Functions - Supports the NFI contribution to the implementation of the FAO Strategy on climate change.
- Assists in the follow-up to relevant Committee on Fisheries (COFI) requests on climate change, specifically on development of tools, guidance on adaptation and mitigation.
- Assists in the preparation of FAO's contribution to global events related to climate change, in particular under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change processes and events (Conference of Parties, Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice, Ocean Dialogue, etc.).
- Provides assistance to resource mobilization work by putting together material of relevance to donors, for example by contributing to the content development and publication of climate change knowledge products.
- Provides assistance to the implementation of fisheries and aquaculture field projects on climate change as required (e.g.
organization of workshops, reporting) and the development of field project concept notes as appropriate.
- Supports the coordination work for the NFI Working Group on climate change (e.g.
internal meetings, information sharing channels) and for a wider network on climate change in fisheries and aquaculture if needed.
- Assists in the liaison with other FAO Divisions/Offices/Centres and Decentralized Offices and contributes to corporate inputs in international climate-related processes and events, as well as resource mobilization.
- Contributes to the update and management of the NFI climate change projects inventory, as well as the compilation of climate change publications.
- Assists in the organization of and participates in relevant meetings, conferences, seminars and workshops as required.
- Performs other related duties as required.
---------------------------------------- CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING Minimum Requirements - Advanced university degree in biology, fishery science, marine ecology, economics, fisheries economics or marine affairs with a specialization in fisheries management and/or governance or other related field.
- Three years of relevant experience in fishery research or application of micro and macro-economic techniques to aquaculture or assessment development or management of fisheries, experience in fish trade, fishery products safety and quality, field of statistics and data management of fisheries, or related field).
- Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

- Extent and relevance of experience in the preparation, editing and revision of technical/scientific documents and in organizing meetings and workshops.
