No Offer Description This is an exciting opportunity to join the Monash University European Research Foundation in a senior leadership position and drive our strategy and engagement in Europe. As the Director, Strategy and Engagement, you will provide high-level strategic, planning, operational, and business advice and implementation support to the Chair of the Board of Directors, as well as various portfolios within Monash University. This position will manage projects and develop strategic proposals and implementation plans to ensure that the Foundation achieves its strategic objectives and supports the strategy of the Founder, the University, including ensuring it is engaged across the global campus network of Monash. In addition, the position manages a range of strategic and operational activities including overseeing financial and other reporting, planning, board support, functional service delivery, projects, business improvement, resources management, system implementation, and administration. Leveraging your demonstrated experience engaging and working with European Research Foundations, Research Institutes, and research-intensive Universities, as well as your deep understanding of the trends and developments in the European research sector, you will work to proactively identify funding and engagement opportunities in order to increase the impact and reach of Monash research as well as grow the volume of research applications being submitted through the Foundation. Essential to this position are exceptional management and leadership skills with a proven ability to strategically manage and provide expert and authoritative advice at the highest levels. In addition, the successful candidate will have outstanding relationship management, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to negotiate, influence, and build consensus at senior levels and with diverse stakeholders on complex and sensitive issues. Please note, the successful candidate will need to be willing to travel as required, including the willingness to work in Australia for up to three months per year. EU working rights are desirable. ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT The Monash University European Research Foundation ETS ('Foundation') was established in 2022 in Prato, Italy. It aims to expand Monash University's research and innovation footprint in Europe, strengthening our connections with European partners, and developing new and strengthening existing partnership opportunities across the higher education, research, and industry sectors. POSITION PURPOSE The Director, Strategy and Engagement is a senior executive responsible for providing high-level strategic, planning, operational, and business advice and implementation support to the Chair of the Board of Directors, Monash University European Research Foundation. This position is instrumental in proactively identifying funding and engagement opportunities in order to grow the volume of research applications being submitted through the Foundation. The Director, Strategy and Engagement will manage projects and develop strategic proposals and implementation plans to ensure that the Foundation achieves its strategic objectives and supports the strategy of the Founder, the University, including ensuring it is engaged across the global campus network of Monash. In addition, the position manages a range of strategic and operational activities including overseeing financial and other reporting, planning, board support, functional service delivery, projects, business improvement, resources management, system implementation, and administration. The position will be directly involved in a variety of activities that are required to support the development of the Foundation during the establishment phase, and it is anticipated the position will continue to evolve over time. Reporting Line: The position reports to the Chair of the Board of Directors under broad direction, working with a considerable degree of autonomy. Supervisory Responsibilities: In the future, this position will provide direct supervision for up to four staff members. Financial Delegation: Yes Budgetary Responsibilities: In line with Key Responsibilities KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Ensure the effective delivery of services to support the Foundation's activities by working closely and effectively with the Chair of the Board of Directors as well as various portfolios within Monash University including: the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research portfolio; Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International portfolio; faculties; and the University's central support services to implement systems, policies, services, and processes as locally appropriate; Lead the Foundation's strategic and business planning by providing high-level advice, data, reports, and papers to the Board of Directors as well as overseeing and implementing operational management activities and processes including financial, HR, and physical resources for the Foundation; Proactively identify funding and engagement opportunities that increase the impact and reach of Monash research and ensure effective communication of these opportunities across relevant areas in order to grow the volume of research applications being submitted through the Foundation; Lead and be accountable for the development and preparation of annual plans, status reports, and briefings for the Board of Directors and Steering Committee, including the development of periodic reports on matters of significant strategic or operational importance; Design, implement, and embed a comprehensive risk management framework for the Foundation; Lead, implement, manage, and be accountable for major strategic projects as well as plan and manage change initiatives; Lead on contract negotiations, ensure timely development and review of Monash University compliant contracts, and manage performance against contract milestones and deliverables; Oversee the development and maintenance of strategic partnerships, collaborations, and networks both within the Monash Group as well as externally, including links into industry and relevant government authorities to promote and facilitate the core activities of the Foundation and attract new funding/program grants; Oversee the implementation of communications and marketing strategies to ensure the Foundation is represented and promoted to the internal Monash community and to industry, government, and the broader community globally for the purpose of developing collaborative alliances and maximizing the impact of its work; Provide leadership through coaching, mentoring, skill and career development, and performance management. Education/Qualifications The appointee will have: Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline and extensive, relevant experience; or A strong record of successful leadership at a senior management level and extensive, relevant experience; or An equivalent combination of extensive, relevant experience and education/training. Knowledge and Skills Exceptional management and leadership skills with proven ability to strategically manage and provide authoritative advice at the highest levels. Experience engaging and working with European Research Foundations and/or Research Institutes, research-intensive Universities, including a deep understanding of the trends and developments in the European research sector such as Horizon Europe Schemes and experience coordinating Horizon Europe Research grants. Outstanding planning, administrative, and organisational skills, with experience in establishing priorities, allocating resources, and meeting deadlines while working under pressure in a large, complex organisation. Outstanding relationship management, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to negotiate and influence at the highest levels. Demonstrated experience in the provision of expert and authoritative advice and recommendations to senior management, with a diverse client base and strategically-focused environment. Demonstrated high-level expertise in the areas of change management, quality management, and project management. Extensive project management experience and skills, with a proven record of successfully managing all aspects of large, complex and organisation-wide projects through to completion. Exceptional numerical, conceptual, and analytical skills, including the ability to identify emerging issues, trends, and risks, evaluate potential impacts, and interpret complex legislation and policy. Exceptional written and presentation skills and a demonstrated capacity to formulate practical approaches/options, and negotiate their successful progress through approval and funding processes. Proven financial and staffing resources management and leadership ability at a senior level and the capacity to perform positively and enhance team capability in a dynamic and changing environment. Knowledge of the Australian Higher Education sector.
