Position Summary: The Director of Research Protections provides administrative oversight of programs that support the institution's conduct of safe and ethically sound scientific research involving human participants, vertebrate animals and biohazards. The committees supported by this office include the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the Institutional Review Board (IRB), the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), and the Financial Conflict of Interest Committee (FCOIC).
The Office of Research Protections provides support and training to faculty, students and staff to promote and meet the ethical and responsible conduct of research and to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements relating to research involving human subjects, vertebrate animal subjects, and biohazards. The Director manages a team of staff that serves as the campus contact for information and consultation on compliance requirements and best practices and provides training as appropriate for understanding of regulatory requirements. The Director, Research Protections, along with the Director of Grants and Contracts, and the VPR, will help develop, implement, and support initiatives for sustaining and growing the research enterprise and culture at Villanova University.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee the operations of institutional research protection functions including: Institutional Review Board; Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee; Institutional Biosafety Committee; Financial Conflicts of Interest Committee. Serve on other committees as assigned. Interface extensively with the Office of Grants and Contracts; University Compliance Office; and University Counsel. Manage a team of multiple direct reports that are responsible for day-to-day administrative responsibilities. Provide professional development, coaching, and oversee progress toward mutually stated goals. Maintain institutional documentation and records related to research protections functions as they impact the research portfolio, and other essential regulatory matters. Ensure that ORP systems and processes capture sufficient data and support or complement the research protections program; participate in continuous improvement initiatives. Utilize available data sources for strategic planning and monitoring. Contribute to the development of institutional policies, procedures, and performance metrics as they relate to research protections. Participate and deliver, as appropriate, institutional professional development programs for faculty and administration related to these topics. Maintain proficiency and expertise in industry-standard regulatory and compliance matters. Collaborate with Faculty as needed to effect job duties. Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree required 5 years experience in university research protections environment required Knowledge of federal guidelines governing human subject's research, research involving animals, research biosafety, and research-related conflicts of interest. Excellent writing and speaking skills required. Comfort with discussing and presenting complex regulatory matters required. The individual must possess exceptional leadership, communication, and data analytics skills, being able to perform, present, and explain complex analyses. The individual must have a deep commitment to the well-being of Villanova University and the advancement of its mission, and to serving the needs of a diverse community. The individual must be an energetic self-starter who will seek out new and creative ways to strengthen the research enterprise and maintain a culture of compliance and ethical and responsible conduct of research. Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in related field strongly preferred. 7-10 years experience in university research protections environment preferred In-depth expertise in human subject's research preferred. Familiarity with the operating implications of federal requirements related to sub recipient monitoring, and other research compliance matters preferred.
