Director of Compliance and Policy (including in-house legal counsel) The Verona Area School District is looking for a Director of Compliance and Policy that will plan, organize, direct and provide professional legal services and counsel to the District in a wide variety of legal matters such as labor and employment, employee and student investigations, Title IX, public records request, student rights, enrollment matters, real estate, litigation, liability, and school bonds. This person will serve as the primary legal advisor for the District with a variety of administrative and legislative bodies. The Director of Compliance and Policy will be a key member of the District's Cabinet Team.
Essential Job Functions:Serve as in-house general counsel for the Verona Area School District (VASD) and advise VASD staff and the VASD Board of Education on legal issues. Provide in-house legal counsel and investigation oversight on labor and employment-related matters, student registration, and enrollment, student services (IEP's and 504's) operations, Title 1 and IX compliance, staff and student investigations, etc.Coordinate efforts with external legal counsel for areas of representation that require litigation and other specialized services.Lead internal investigations on behalf of the district concerning employee and student violations of district policy, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and any other legal-related matters. Develop and maintain a tracking system of investigation outcomes. Analyze data and develop proactive measures to address trends and patterns.Provide guidance and responses to Public Records Requests in collaboration with Public Information Officer / Communications Director.Provide representation in administrative processes, including truancy cases, expulsion hearings, Office of Civil Rights reviews and complaints, subpoenas, grievances, WERC investigations, etc. as assigned.Monitor, review, and comment on policies and procedures implemented by the school district and Board of Education.Develop and lead VASD's legal resources and policy programs. Develop and implement training initiatives to educate students and staff on rights, responsibilities, and resources regarding legal matters and compliance.Serve as Title IX Coordinator.Research and develop resources to keep VASD administration and Board of Education apprised of current legal issues and policies affecting the school district.Qualifications:Juris Doctorate from accredited law schoolThree years of law experienceLicense to practice law in the State of WisconsinPrior legal experience in school law or in-house labor relations preferredBilingual skills are highly valued but not requiredLearn More and Apply Online: https://wecan.waspa.org/Vacancy/169650
