Posting Details Posting Number: 20241185F Position Title: Director of American Sign Language at Villanova University Position Type: Faculty Location: Villanova, PA Recruitment Type: Internal/External Applicants Work Schedule: full-time/9-months Department: 145-Communication Position Summary: The Department of Communication at Villanova University seeks applicants for an up to three-year Director of American Sign Language at the rank of Assistant Instructor or Assistant Teaching Professor, to begin Fall 2025.
Upon successful evaluation in the first year, this position may be renewed for two additional years.
The position will require teaching two undergraduate courses per semester and administering the ASL program.
The ASL program serves the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Undergraduate Core Language requirement as well as the Deaf Studies Minor Track.
Since the Deaf and Disability Studies Program was established in Fall 2022 and ASL's Core Language status in Fall 2023, the ASL and Deaf Studies classes have grown exponentially, currently serving more than 250 students each semester.
Housed within the Department of Communication, the ASL program lives alongside one of the largest undergraduate majors in the College.
The Communication Department offers course work leading to the B.A.
in Communication with opportunities to concentrate in eight different areas of the discipline.
In addition, the Department supports an M.A.
program in Communication.

Duties and Responsibilities Position Description: The position will involve teaching 14 credits per academic year and coordinating the growing ASL program.
Our new colleague will teach one section of Introduction to Deaf Studies, one section of ASL 1 or ASL 2, and one ASL lab section each semester.
In addition, they will coordinate hiring, training, and evaluation of ASL instructors, oversee curriculum development and assessment, coordinate course scheduling and interpreter needs, build cohesion within the team of ASL instructors, liaise with the Deaf and Disability Studies Program (Deaf Studies Minor Track) and Office of Undergraduate Students, and serve as advisor of the ASL Club.
Minimum Qualifications Basic Requirements: Advanced degree specializing in ASL and Deaf Studies from an ASL or Deaf Studies program or related field (e.g., Communication, Education, Sociolinguistics, Comparative Literature).
If a candidate does not hold a terminal degree (PhD or MFA), an MA with extensive professional experience will be acceptable.
Candidates must have college-level teaching experience and demonstrated expertise teaching in the areas of ASL and Deaf Studies.
