Development And Characterization Of A X-Ray Detector For Indirect Dark Matter Search Within The Epsi

The candidate will work on the EPSI project, Electron Positron Space Instrument, (CUP I53D23000640006) which aims to design, develop and optimize a future space experiment dedicated to the direct measurement of the flow of electrons and, separately, very high energy cosmic positrons. To this end, EPSI aims to develop a new technique for the discrimination of electrons and positrons starting from the detection of synchrotron radiation (X-rays) emitted when it passes through the Earth's magnetic field. In particular, the X-ray detector has to guarantee sufficient granularity to allow the detection of individual photons emitted along the curvilinear trajectory of electrons and positrons, while ensuring high detection efficiency for photons with energy between 1 and 100 keV. The project consists of two work packages, which complement each other. The first is dedicated to hardware development. We will start with the characterization and implementation of the minimum detection unit. Upon completion, a small prototype of the flight detector will be built. The second work package will focus on the software part using Monte Carlo simulations. The work will focus on optimizing the geometry of the flight detector, with particular attention to energy resolution, angular resolution, and background rejection, as well as defining the optimal orbit.
