ASA Summer Undergraduate Research and Internship Experience in Acoustics (SURIEA) Position title: Cohort Coordinator for the ASA Summer Undergraduate Research and Internship Experience in Acoustics (SURIEA) Location: Remote with some travel Full description of the position and SURIEA program overview: The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) is seeking to hire one Cohort Co-Coordinator for the SURIEA program, with a core program between May 25 – August 1, 2025. We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow or current graduate student with mentoring experience to coordinate the SURIEA program along with one additional co-coordinator. The SURIEA program is an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students from racial/ethnic groups that are underrepresented in acoustics ( i.e. Black, Latina/o, Native American, Alaskan Native). In addition to completing a summer project in a research or industry setting, cohort members will meet virtually as a group and one-on-one with the two Cohort Co-Coordinators at least once a week to discuss their experiences and learn about academic and career opportunities in acoustics or acoustics-related fields. The Cohort Coordinators will receive compensation of $3,000 (before taxes) and travel funds to attend the SURIEA Acoustics Short Course in person and 2 ASA Meetings. Expectations outlined below: RESPONSIBILITIES Meet virtually with cohort as a group once per week for 1 hour Facilitate weekly topic meetings such as: Applying to grad school, attending conferences, writing papers, presenting posters/research, work/life balance Work with co-coordinator to facilitate meaningful interactions among SURIEA students through games, icebreakers, and meaningful discussions related to weekly meeting topics Meet virtually with cohort members one-on-one once per week for 15 minutes Check in with every cohort member individually at least once a week Learn about their research/internship progress and barriers Help students set achievable personal and professional goals and track progress toward goals Communicate with co-coordinator and the SURIEA organizing committee to address problems as they arise Make use of appropriate technology to interact with the cohort Invite & schedule pre-identified guest speakers to interact with cohort Other grad students, industry workers, ASA members, etc. Help connect cohort members with people who could go into more depth about field specific questions/concerns ANTICIPATED COMMITMENT About 10-hours per coordinator weekly from May through August 2025 Participate in training on working with diverse groups, offered before and throughout SURIEA program Maintain open communication channels throughout the academic year to support cohort members with ASA related activities. DESIRED SKILL SET Commitment to supporting underrepresented students and advancing diversity and inclusion in acoustics Background in an acoustics-related field Familiarity with ASA organization Experience in graduate studies and/or attending conferences Good listening and communication (written and oral) skills (related to email and/or social media, also with leading and having discussions with mentee cohort, whether it be one-on-one or in groups) Prior experience in education and outreach with undergraduates Ability to organize and conduct well-run meetings and activities Comfortable with learning/using software and social media to connect with cohort (and willing to learn the best methods with which to connect with cohort) What experiences have you had mentoring college-aged students in the past? Describe your mentoring principles. For example, consider how often mentoring interactions should take place, what supporting team members should interact with the student, how to identify and provide resources to students, how to address unexpected challenges, etc. What experiences do you have working with students who are different from you (for example, in terms of racial identity, socioeconomic status, gender identity, etc.)? What challenges might arise mentoring students who may have identities that differ from yours, and how would you address these challenges? J-18808-Ljbffr
