Organizational Setting FAO has established the Core leadership composed of Three Deputy Directors-General (DDGs), Director of Cabinet, Chief Economist and Chief Scientist with an Organigramme and a modular management structure that avoids silos and promotes working jointly at all managerial levels in a cross-sectoral and global manner for a more efficient and effective Organization.
Reporting Lines The Chief Scientist reports to the Director-General.
Summary of Duties and Functions Accelerating and scaling up innovation is fundamental for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and leveraging emerging opportunities for reaching a world free from hunger, poverty and malnutrition. The Chief Scientist will:
Consolidate and strengthen FAO's innovative ethos.Ensure that FAO applies modern science and technology.Promote innovative approaches for scaling up work.Leverage science and innovation across the Organization.Coordinate intelligence gathering for new programmes.Lead task forces on sustainability issues.Employ systems thinking for innovative policy assistance.Lead the development of an evidence-based perspective on innovation.Foster and promote innovations within FAO.Lead and oversee the work of the Office for Innovation.Develop a policy to enhance assistance to Members.Nurture partnerships with R&D actors.Lead and manage the Office by supervising its staff.Oversee risk management in relevant units.Advocate FAO's policy position and communicate its messages.CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING Advance university degree (PhD preferred) in a relevant field.At least fifteen years of relevant experience.Demonstrated professional competence and management leadership.Working knowledge of English and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language.Experience with multilateral negotiations.Good resource mobilization and partnership development skills.Ability to lead and work effectively with a diverse team.Leadership Competencies: Results focus, Leading, engaging and empowering others, Communication, Partnering and Advocating, Knowledge sharing and continuous improvement, Strategic thinking.
