Our faculty have specialties that span Arts Sciences.
Our program centers collaborative, interdisciplinary research and learning in collective and individual settings.
We offer an engaging environment that enables students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees to sustain intellectual and personal growth.The Department of Art Art History at William Mary explores art and architecture through creative studio practice and historical inquiry.
Faculty offer a variety of approaches and perspectives to create art and do research.
Our Art History program offers courses in a wide variety of historical areas and subjects, including Byzantine art, Chinese painting, or contemporary works in every imaginable medium.
Students learn the visual and material culture skills and critical thinking that is the heart of studying art history, and will also have the intensive research and writing experience that is characteristic of a liberal arts education.Position Summary: The American Studies Program and Department of Art and Art History at William Mary seek applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in visual culture.
The position is a joint appointment in the American Studies Program (75%) and Art and Art History (25%).
Appointment will begin August 10, 2025.The American Studies Program and the Department of Art and Art History seek to expand our areas of expertise by hiring a colleague who engages the ways in which images frame our understanding of the social world and the making of intersectional identities and differences.We seek a colleague with interdisciplinary research and teaching expertise in visual culture.
Specializations might include, among others, photography, screen cultures, graphic arts, painting, and vernacular art, artifacts, and landscapes including their production and circulation.
Historical and/or contemporary perspectives of visual culture are welcome.Scholars working on the LatinX, Latina/o, and/or Ibero-American diaspora, or on Indigeneity in the Americas, and/or Afro-Caribbean identities are especially welcome.Duties include research, teaching, and service to the American Studies Program, the Art and Art History Department, and the University.
The successful applicant will have evidence of scholarly achievement or demonstrated potential as a scholar and is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body.
They will also be expected to mentor master's and Ph.D. students in the American Studies graduate program.Teaching expectation is two courses per semester.
Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach compelling courses in visual culture and other lecture and seminar-style courses in the American Studies Program and the Department of Art and Art History.Required Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Visual Culture, American Studies, Art History, or a related field such as Digital Humanities, Ethnic Studies, Film Studies, Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, Indigenous Studies, LGBTQ Studies, LatinX, Latina/o Studies, New Media, and Religious Studies at the time the appointment begins (August 10, 2025).Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
