**The Anesthesia Technician(s) is/ are members of the Oradell Animal Hospital Patient Services Department and their main function is to provide high quality care to the surgical/MRI/CT patients.
These technicians work as a team to provide the safest care and environment for our surgical patients including**:
(1) Monitoring anesthesia
(2) Pre-operative, intra-op, and post-operative treatments (via surgeon's or case Doctor's instruction)
(3) Maintenance and management of surgery suite and equipment
(4) Introduction and training of other staff members, and new surgery technicians.
**Responsibilities**
- **Monitoring** **anesthesia**
- Visualizing normal arrhythmias.
- Visualizing abnormal aspects of complexes and knowledge of how that affects the patient, and what to do.
- Electrocardiographic monitoring
- Pulse
- Ox monitoring.
- Use of esophageal-stethoscope.
- Intravenous therapy (at surgical volumes).
- Tangible vital monitoring (such as mucus membranes or capillary refill time).
- Blood pressure as needed.
- Patient assessment via oral communication and record history.
- Constant assessment of levels of anesthesia.
- **Procedural Preparation and** **Care**
- Preparing instruments for particular procedures
- Ensuring proper recumbence of patient for surgeon's needs.
- Logging of procedure & review of appropriate paperwork.
- Recording of vital statistics as often as is possible, on anesthesia report.
- Completion of post
- operative treatment slip
- ICU checks & frequency
- IV fluid therapy rates
- Pain management information
- Grooming needs
- Timing of additional treatments or necessary procedures
- Biopsy reports and care
- **Surgeon /** **Technician Interaction**
- Communication regarding procedural needs
- Notification of changes in patient status.
- Retrieval of any unforeseen surgical instruments as needs arise.
- Maintaining a sterile & clean environment.
- Awareness of surgical caseload, and keeping the system flowing.
- During procedures, being aware of the surgeon's 'set up' table & keeping it neat and in ample supply of necessary items.
- Keeping the anesthesia machines in proper working condition, including their level of anesthetic (currently Isoflurane).
- **Management of surgical suite &** **equipment**
- Making sure suite is clean & tidy
- Assuring suite is adequately stocked.
- Maintain suites appearance & organization
- Being aware of any malfunctions of monitors or equipment, and notifying the appropriate person.
- **Training**
- Introducing technical staff members to their newest arena.
- Shadowing those technicians so as to instruct them in the art of surgery, and enabling those technicians to follow all of the above mentioned items.
- Supplying Nitrogen lines to medical equipment
- **Requirements**:
- Individual should be Credentialed Veterinary Technician and conform to OAH standards (Veterinary Technician Level)
- Excellent client communication skills required
- Strong interest in surgery required
- Associate degree is encouraged
- Willingness to work flexible hours is essential, as schedule may change with hospita needs.
- Must be able to lift with and without assistance and stand for extended lengths of time.
