12665Ocean Data Assimilation and Machine LearningDeadline: January 20th, 2025WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORThe Institute for Earth System Prediction (IESP) is seeking a motivated Post-Degree Researcher or Junior Scientist to join the data assimilation team within the Regional Ocean Forecasting Systems (ROFS) division.
We are looking for individuals with a foundation in physical and/or computational sciences and a keen interest in advancing ocean forecasting capabilities.ABOUT USCMCC Foundation is a cross-cutting scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, society, the world of business, and policymakers.

These methodologies aim to enhance ocean estimates through the integration of space-borne and in-situ observations.
You will collaborate with an enthusiastic and multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers, contributing to cutting-edge innovations in regional ocean forecasting.RESPONSIBILITIESThe incumbent will be:Analyzing Mediterranean observational productsExploring methodologies to integrate them in ocean modelsDeveloping techniques and tools to ingest them in the regional systems maintained by ROFS.Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.QUALIFICATIONSEssential:A Degree in Physics, Geophysics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Sciences or related scientific disciplines with a research background.Knowledge of data assimilation techniques and/or machine learning methods.Experience in observational and model data analysis and processing.Strong programming skills (Python and Fortran preferably).Knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and scripting languages (e.g., bash).Good communication skills.Desirable:Code development using version controlling systems (e.g., git).Experience in high performance computers (HPC)DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITSPlease note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.The Ocean Data Assimilation and Machine Learning expert will be based in Bologna CMCC office.The appointment period will be initially of 12 months starting from January/February 2025, with a gross annual salary range of 17-30K Euros depending on the experience.
Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher.Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.Flexible working time as per internal policies.Support during the immigration process, if needed.PROTECTED CATEGORYBelonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.
Some fiscal benefits could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researchers/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).
