CMCC Position cod. 12646 Urban Microclimate Modeling Specialist
Deadline: December 6th, 2024
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are seeking an experienced Urban Microclimate Modeling Specialist to join our Regional Models and Geo-Hydrological Impacts (REMHI) division, based in Caserta. The ideal candidate will have expertise in applying advanced microclimate models (e.g., PALM4U, ENVIMET, SOILWEG) to analyze urban dynamics and assess the impacts of climate change on urban areas. A strong background in integrating microclimate simulations with regional climate models is highly desirable, as well as experience in developing adaptation solutions for urban resilience.
This position is based at the CMCC headquarters in Caserta.
We value flexibility: this position offers a part-time option, especially for candidates with a high level of professional expertise.
ABOUT US
CMCC Foundation is a cross-cutting scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, society, the world of business, and policymakers. Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment, and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change. CMCC's core objective is to conduct cutting-edge science, to train the next generation of scientists at both national and international levels, and to be a beacon for climate modelling.
At CMCC you will find a strong, professional environment. Join an inclusive community that values diversity, where every voice is heard and respected. Help foster a culture of innovation and societal change, where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive and succeed.
ROLE
This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and development projects, supporting the enhancement of urban resilience through advanced microclimate modeling. REMHI is recognized as a leader in this field across Europe, providing a unique opportunity for impactful work.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Urban Microclimate Modeling Specialist will support the Regional Models and Geo-Hydrological Impacts (REMHI) division, with:
Utilize advanced urban microclimate models (e.g., PALM4U, ENVIMET, SOILWEG) to simulate urban dynamics such as temperature, humidity, and heat fluxes, analyzing the impacts of climate change on urban areas. Integrate microclimate simulations with regional climate models to improve the representation of climatic impacts at urban and sub-regional scales. Analyze interactions between regional climate phenomena (e.g., heatwaves, extreme weather events) and urban environments. Validate model outputs using observational data, field measurements, and satellite data. Develop adaptation scenarios and conduct "what-if" analyses to propose solutions aimed at enhancing urban resilience. Contribute to technical reports, policy briefs, and scientific publications to support urban climate adaptation strategies for public and private stakeholders. REQUIREMENTS Master's degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Urban Climate, Environmental Engineering, Architecture or a related field, or PhD in a relevant discipline. Experience in microclimate modeling and/or regional climate modeling. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB for model development and data analysis. Experience with climate data processing tools such as CDO and NCO. Background in evaluation of simulated data with multi-platform observational data. Ability to prepare comprehensive technical and scientific documentation. Availability to travel for limited periods. Optional Skills: Experience with specific microclimate models such as PALM4U, ENVIMET, or SOILWEG. Good communication skills and the ability to present complex scientific concepts clearly. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Motivation to stay updated on emerging methodologies and techniques. Team-oriented approach with effective collaboration skills. DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience. Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
