WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Our Institute for Earth System Predictions (IESP) is looking for a new position of postdoc/junior scientist (depending on demonstrated expertise), located in Bologna, to support activities of sub-seasonal to seasonal forecast, with a special focus on Early Warning Systems (EWS).
Workplace location: Bologna ROLE The postdoc/junior scientist is responsible for the implementation and validation of EWS tools in Venice and for the interaction with MedEWSa project partners, mainly focusing on the extension of the existent sea level Early Warning System to the sub-seasonal time horizon.
RESPONSIBILITIES Developing the tools to extend the Venice EWS to the sub-seasonal time horizon in collaboration with Centro Previsioni e Segnalazioni Maree del Comune di Venezia; Monitoring the advancement of the MedEWSA project and the CMCC relationship with other partners (special focus on African partners, participating to the Sea Level EWS Twin); Preparing relative software, ready to be shared, and managing relative technical reports; Supporting CMCC colleagues in the development of a Machine Learning based prototype for a sea level EWS; Producing scientific papers based on the activities carried out during the project.
REQUIREMENTS A PhD in scientific disciplines, possibly related to climate dynamics; Proven experience in numerical modelling and/or climate data handling; Very good knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and skills in programming language (i.e.
Python and Fortran); Very good knowledge of the English language; Excellent organisational skills and high attention to detail; Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; Teamworking attitude and ability to work independently.
DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Based on the duration of the employment contract, without prejudice to any changes in organisation and/or career paths and downstream of the performance appraisal; The appointment is assigned following: internal selection; external selection in the event that there are no internal candidates, or they are assessed as unsuitable.
The appointment period will be initially of 24 months starting from April 2024 , renewable for 24 additional months pending a positive evaluation.
Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher; The gross annual salary range is from 35 to 42K Euros , depending on qualification and working experience; Welfare package; Flexible working time; Support during the immigration process, if needed.
Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.
Some fiscal benefits could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researchers/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).
